The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) is a nonprofit that takes an outside-of-the-box approach to civic engagement to educate & mobilize young people across the world toward issues of literacy, equality, and human rights. Their mission is to empower our members to act like the heroes that they love by acting for a better world

Some really great kids in Jim Thorpe have started a local chapter of HPA & I'd like to raise $5k in their founding members name in time for June graduation.

20% of all Witch Wolf? The Curse Kindle sales will be directed towards this goal.
There will also be a ROLLER SKATING party in the spring at Memorial Park in Jim Thorpe. Just sayin!

Not only am I hoping to give back to some truly amazing kids here in town that are doing awesome things for both the global and local community but I'd like to also encourage other schools to start their own chapter of HPA.

Recycled Xmas & Green Holiday Wishes!

This holiday I knew I needed to make my daughters time extra special. What was I to do?
Our family is south till spring. And since we've been gypsy's, Sophia made it quite clear that she needs a place to call her own.

As a determined single green mommy not only did I want to give her medicine for all of the above but I also needed to get her out of the habit of sleeping in my bed. (Mommy's medicine!)

I asked her what color I could paint her room while showing her some examples of fairy tale bedrooms online. Wanting to get an idea of her creative genius and see what would make her sleep and play in her own part of our "castle" with ease.
Needless to say Sophia didn't want pink walls or polka dots sheets or green (her favorite color) anything.

She did however scream at the sight of this:

For days later she insisted that she wanted a tree house bed with a pretty light.

Wow. Did I have my work cut out for me! Where was I ever to start?

Asking around I got quotes that was way more than I could shell out at this moment in time.

So I put it out to the universe and am excited to report that this fairy tale has a happy ending.

The first grain of holiday luck struck when I scored a bunk bed.

My friends Andrea & Jim were looking to switch out their son's bunk for something a little more age appropriate. They even delivered and assembled it while I was at work.

They knew that I wanted to make this thing a surprise and that I was working on limited time.

In speaking to Aileen & Dave Miller I inherited tree branches to make this thing have a real woods like feel. When Aileen dropped them off (saw included) my partner Selena was putting together the chandelier (which Sophia also insisted on having) that she donated to the cause.

This particular evening was my first experience with power tools. SWOON!

My girls (Selena & Aileen) really knew what they were doing and I was in awe.

We added some loose branches to the foundation of the bed. Things were on the up! But what next?

David Watkins Price threw in bed sheets that were no longer of need to him. Blue and white stripes! Perfect!

Then Tom Storm & I sat down, discussed, drew and contemplated how to go about this project with the materials gathered and budget I was working with.

Mary Huber Harwood picked up a king size sheet and some lace for me while I was putting design together with Tom. I gave us a deadline of Friday the 16th because while I so desperately wanted to suprise Sophia on Christmas my nerves were becoming shot with her sleeping in my bed and her clothes and bed being displaced from her room. You see, when Andrea & Jim put up the bed, I closed off Sophia's room with wrapping paper & a note from Santa

.....she was amazing about not peeking!

So here's a look at what Mommy and the true Spirit of Christmas delivered to our home yesterday.

I couldn't take the suspense of waiting. It was also suggested that Sophia know how much she was loved by all & how hard we worked to make her holiday wishes come true.

Santa is still coming...but until then, we are both sleeping better with visions of ...well....I'm just happy!

The end result :)

So, the moral of this blog to which I'm sharing in this space...

You really don't have to buy something new for Christmas to make the holiday special.

You can make the spirit bright by accepting gifts and time from others and making them into something magical & your own.

With the leftover branches & light fixture Selena bought I started working on my own vision for my home office (which will look something like the Mad Hatters Tea Party and a Gypsy's side show)!

In conclusion, I'd like to take a moment to firmly acknowledge that the spirit of the season & making my daughter's wishes bright was fully supported in time & love by:

That's the best part of this entire experience and as I type with tears in my eyes - I feel so very lucky.

My wish for you is that you get back what you gave to us in three's.

This peach is still green.

   Things have been becoming ripe-ish since we last met dear ones.
After joining forces with artisan & soap formulator Selena Mazmanian of 13th Moon Creations I've learned a thing or seven, made some pretty cool concoctions, met some amazing people, got my feet wet and of course I'm still getting my hands dirty as to what really is
eco conscious consumerism.
   It's not ironic to me that the occupy movement takes off and people are starting to rally and support something less than big business. Word on the streets is there is certainly a green revolution of sorts happening in our economy. People are becoming more aware that they do have a say. I'd like to think that I'm being present to this movement - creating a financial future my (& my partner's) own way.
Trying to also be a person of my word and have great integrity doing what I love (helping others) and getting paid to do it. Green but growing - being what I love and creating an authentic life to honor that. I want to be a good example for my daughter. True story. But I digress.....

GREEN is a secondary color when you mix two other primary colors.
Selena & I recently created Venus & The Moon. A magical blend of body and soul, naturally.
It will be home to `13th Moon Creations & host my Soul Services.

Selena & I are excited to also represent local artists (Anne Martino) & crafters (Zen Creations) and are pleased to announce that Friday December 2nd Devin Greco, a self taught painter and Pocono Mountains native will have her first official showing at our space on 31 Race Street in Jim Thorpe.
The event is from 5-7pm. Celebratory cocktails immediately after at The Black Bread Cafe, 47 Race Street.

     Venus & The Moon is calling for submissions for
   a collaborative recipe book regarding: Aphrodisiac's.
   We'd love for you to share a recipe or story & photo of one of your favorites.
   Portion of the proceed of this endeavor will go to NO KID HUNGRY.

Greening My first Novel. Behind the Scenes.

Five years ago I penned the book I knew was brewing in me since I was a kid.
Fresh out of my marketing position at LIVE 105 in San Francisco, I had found the book
No Plot? No Problem which was part of a much larger picture. It served as a gateway to a community of writers who commit the month of November to writing. November in this circle is National Novel Writing Month. Nanowrimo.org

Man. I was hooked.

After thirty long, hard days of avoiding friends, dodging holiday parties and truly getting to know the meaning of commitment it was... done. It would take another few years of editing, rewriting, hiring a professional editor, having a baby, relentlessly soliciting agents and publishers, yielding rejection letters and being so closed to penning representation for me to finally decide to set this creative child free unto the world ...on my own.

I made this decision mostly because this grand story in a shiny black and white cover is only in part fiction. Of course names have been changed & I've followed the rules of fiction writing to the line. However, when it comes down to it, Witch Wolf? The Curse is a vivid recollection of the time I was bullied in grade school because of my freakish like appearance.

Yes. That's me.
At twelve years old I was overweight. I had no teeth or hair. This combination does not make the best of days for a little girl. But without my parents and a few teachers encouraging me despite the taunting from peers, I've lived to tell - creatively - in hopes to encourage other children who may be or have been through similar circumstances that they too can overcome.

I've teamed up with Bob Schaeffer and Chris West at Behavior Health Associates in Lehighton in hopes to provide education to local school children about effects of bullying.
A portion of the sale of Witch Wolf? The Curse will allow for an anti bullying program to be brought to a school near you. Please contact me for a book drive in your school or more info.

Choosing to self publish was not an easy decision.
Many people say that no one of any literary anything

will ever take me seriously as a writer.

But I needed to set free this little girl who had a great big story to tell inside of me.

So I chose this past independence day to do such things :)

I also thought the self publishing route would most definitely honor the Green Mommy in me as Witch Wolf? The Curse is available as print on demand.
No excess copies or trees wasted in the production. (Please & Thank you!)

Since I've writing Witch Wolf? The Curse I've also been blessed to pen a TV pilot, a few scripts and of course I've started the next book in the Witch Wolf series: Sibling Rivalry.
I've also gave birth to GreenMomGreenbaby.
I'm blessed to contribute to the amazing Dark Beauty Magazine as Krafty Kitty (Resident White Witch). I continue to blog about the amazing paranormal adventure my life has become at http://mlgallagher.blogspot.com.
I couldn't be more proud to have a beautiful daughter who continues to inspire me to be the best person I can be every day - hence giving birth to my second, inner child; Witch Wolf? The Curse.

Green LOVE to Alphabet Rockers!

Some moons ago, when I had the pleasure of living in San Francisco,
I used to take Hip Hop. (Whaaaaaat?)
I also used to teach it to kids in 6-8th grade at a private school that didn't have an arts program.

In the adventure of shaking my you know what I met some really fantastic people.
One of which I want to give huge GreenMom love to here : Kaitlin McGaw

Kaitlin is a super talented energy with a powerful voice. Not only did I have the pleasure to dance with her, but I sitting in the audience when Kaitlin sings is nothing short of magical. Kaitlin founded Alphabet Rockers in 2001 and has toured the country encouraging our young ones to hunt for shapes while singing and dancing her heart out (she has an amazing voice!)

I'm really excited because Alphabet Rockers recently released a new song and video that Sophia & I have been boogying too all week, Shape Rap!

More is Le$$ & Le$$ is AMAZING!

WOW! What a remarkable day already. The sun is shining and I feel amazing.

It's been about six weeks now since Sophia and I have began
our adventure with a greener, healthier more plant based and electrifying diet. (Crazy Sexy Diet)

I've sat back and taken stock of how things in our life have changed since then and I hope to inspire or perhaps induce radical questioning about your current way of doing things.

First things first, Sophia's allergy symptoms have lessened quite a bit even with the dramatic weather changes that we have been experiencing. (hot, cold, rain, rain, cold, hot)
Switching her to soy instead of organic regular milk has done wonders for her "snot locker" as my Dad politely calls it. Which means, we are using LE$$ tissues and breathing easier a whole lot more :)

Having my little dancing queen eat more veggies and less mac and cheese has been quite fun!
Last night we snacked on soy beans and made a game of it.
If she doesn't like something new like sliced red peppers for example she politely tells me and I switch out her snack with a fruit or veggie I know she'll finish.
She even watches me cut the veggies and says "Great Job Mommy!" when I'm done.
What a hambone.

I've noticed that with a plant based diet our waste is a lot LE$$.
Our trash can holds the same garbage bag for over a week as opposed to the dilemma we were previously running in to. Living in the mountains does not make for the waste game to be an easy one. Lots of wild animals including deer, squirrels, raccoons oh and let's not forget our friend the bear make it hard to keep trash contained in it's bag once it's "taken out."
So the two trash bags we were producing a week were a bit of a dilemma. But now - voila!
Eating less meat and less produced food is producing much, much LE$$ trash! Le$$ garbage bag buying and time spent cleaning up after furry wooded friends is Boom! Magical stuff right there!

Personally, I feel much lighter emotionally, spiritually and physically than I ever have in my life.
Don't get me wrong. It's a process of shedding and learning and growing (with an incredible amount of bathroom time and some tears) but I'm happy to do it. Some of the recipes I've been indulging in are F$ing delicious. No joke.

Knowing that my diet is my health insurance, my responsibility and divine choice is completely empowering. When people give me grief about not eating meat or they opinion of "eating right" I now have LE$$ of a hard time arguing when I simply respond to them (while smiling) that I feel amazing.
My physical symptoms that led me to the threshold of transformation have subsided to a degree that are manageable. Can I get an Amen?
I also don't mind the compliments that are rolling in either. I look a lot thinner than I did six weeks ago. For the first time in my life I'm welcoming remarks about my appearance with open arms and an open heart.

More meditation, More movement and more veggies have let me get rid of something I used to call "momnesia" - the moments that I couldn't recall who I spoke to the day before or what I had for breakfast the day of. Ironically without coffee, I am a ball of energy out of bed before seven am, (sometimes six!) and working toward my writing goals and getting $hit done!
How does that equation work out?
No caffiene = Le$$ spent on creamer, coffee & filters, less time cleaning the coffee pot/mugs and actually MORE time fully alert and awake and not feeling like a slave to $tarbucks. WOW. There's no agony in that irony. I'm living proof.

But I'm not here to preach. I'm just hoping to perhaps light the fire of health, wellness and wheatgrass under your @$$. Because parents, if we become the best example we can possible be for our children then we will have no one else to blame (not the government, the educational system or our extended families) but US when they become wellness warriors with A+ doctor check ups with amazing attitudes and report cards.

And just to let you know that I'm perfectly flawed and greatly human I will admit that I have slipped and have had one (ok it was like one and a half) Djarum cigarettes. I also have not and I am not sure that I can ever give up chocolate.
Coffee, alcohol, milk, cheese, chicken, fish, my cloves (and some really toxic people) are enough to handle without a little 'comfort'. But instead of beating myself over the head with this one thing I'm trying to just go with the flow.

On that note, I read something this morning in Philosophers Notes that I wanted to share. It made mention that even the most enlightened beings burn their bagels sometimes. More appropriately;
“God turns you from one feeling to another and teaches by means of opposites, so that you will have two wings to fly, not one.” - Rumi.

Sweet.I hope my wings are like the green butterfly I keep dreaming about.

Green & Loco Local!

Sophia and I enjoyed a beautiful summer day locally in the Poconos.
I'm feeling very blissed out over our time together. Sometimes the best adventures are really right in your own back yard.

Delightfully, the post office had a much anticipated package - the first proof copy of my novel:
Witch Wolf? The Curse. I'm giggling with anticipation to mark it in red pen and finally give birth to it through self-publication.

Smiling ear to ear, the beebs and I made our way into Jim Thorpe to have lunch at our favorite spot: FLOW. This amazing place is a farm to table restaurant that is also an art gallery and marker of days gone by.
Personally I love being here - because my Grandmother (Gallagher) used to work within the walls when it was a factory. I also carry a torch in my heart for Flow because it's the closest thing to city life in this rural area. It was also the first place I got to show my artwork east of the Mississippi!
The atmosphere is a wee bit friendlier these days with the new Exec. Chef Zachary Pelliccio, a super great energy and talent. Zach is working on candy pickles, hot sauce and salsa. Sophia and I got to taste the pickles today and they were super yummy!

Next we paid a visit to our good friend Randall Sellers at Sellers Books & Fine Arts on Broadway.
Long overdue!! Randall finds the most amazing, eclectic books. I could leave with dozens in my arms at a time. I'm a ferocious reader! He even said I could read another excerpt from Witch Wolf? when it's ready! yay!

I stocked up on essential oils and got an updated lid for Phia's Kleen Kanteen at Naturally Yours right next door. It's always a pleasure to see Owner, June Gaudreau a wise, beautiful woman who enlightened me in our conversation about the possible side effects I'm having from turning vegan = They may not be food or detox related after all!! I have to give her huge, huge props - her patience with Sophia's wandering hands and ambitious drum playing was more than amazing. I've never experienced my daughters curiosity like it took off today. My nervous mothering /anxiousness almost had me sweating in her AC! But June handled the situation with grace and ease. Bravo lady.

I promised Miss Sophia that we could go to the Library. She asks me every other day if we could. I read her a book then we explored it's walls and chatted with the librarian about a possible reading once Witch Wolf? The Curse is ready to be shelved. How exciting!

Our evening wrapped up at our usual date night spot: BVT. Tonight it was special because we got to experience the very successful open house. (Boulder View Tavern).
(Congrats coworkers! I LUV YA) Sophia always loves mingling with everyone! She's such an entertainer :) Tonight it was important that she tell people "I used to live in mommy's belly!"

As I look back on the day, I'm excited to realize that within the twenty miles we traveled we saw dozens of beautiful, familiar faces, exchanged tons of smiles and hugs and it felt as if we came around the world and back.
It truly was a perfect day in our backyard- mini vacay -that baby girl and I needed.
It also made me realize just how really lucky I am to live here.
Talking to and sharing with like minded people who have escaped big city life for something simpler, something removed from the who and what they used to be. We really all are in this together. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one on a quest to be greener, leaner and more conscious in my earth journey. It's even cooler with the backdrop being such an amazing destination.

GreenMom reports from the Crazy Sexy Diet

GREAT NEWS!

Summer is near.

Children in school itch to ride their last bus ride and receive their final report cards.

Whispers of parents planning vacations fill the air.

Tis the ‘busy season’ in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

The streets are lining with cars from New York, New Jersey and Maryland. Oy!

Ah to live is to work as long as you make your work divine.

Work in thanks that you have the opportunity to smile at strangers and provide for your family. This then is much less than work.

Here’s to powering though the upcoming hot and humid days with dignity and grace.

We're three weeks deep into our new green diet/lifestyle. (Crazy Sexy Diet)

This is so much more intense than recycling baby clothes and plastic bottles. But I feel lighter in so many ways. I can tell a difference in Sophia's breathing too.

For some reason, I went balls out cold turkey QUIT everything. TOTALLY GONZO!

No coffee, no Djarum Clove cigarettes, no meat, no milk.

Period.

The withdrawl wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. Honestly. A minor headache here and there. A buffalo wing craving at least a handful of times. No big.

I can talk to you for at least an hour about the expulsion side of this new being. The things that are coming out of me verbally, mentally, physically aren’t anything less than shocking. I’ve even thrown my hand over my mouth a few times in an attempt to stop words coming from places within I didn’t know existed.

What a phenomenon! Despite the emotional writhing and occasional monster zit, I feel goooooooooooood. I don't even mind it. It's kind of a really cool release to be honest. Long over due. With this in mind. Colors seem much brighter. Birds and animals seem friendlier. And my senses are completely on. There is no 3pm hunger crash. In fact, I'm hardly hungry at all.
And drumroll.....
I'm SHRINKING!

Now, we are also very excited to report that Green Baby Phia now drinks soy milk, enjoys vegan cheese and fresh strawberries or blueberries instead of Goldfish (every kids staple).

Baby girl is also interested in tasting Mommy’s “crazy juice”.

Even if she screws her nose up at it, it’s a new daily routine that ends in a giggle.

GREETINGS to the present moment. To you. Welcome.
Deep breaths. Not worrying about what's been yesterday or what's coming tomorrow.
All this "Rapture" talk leaves me now, more than ever just wanting to be...right...here....right...now.
It's the only certainty we really have.

We can PRAY for the things we've done in the past hoping that in the near future when said finishing axe, death star comet or zombie Apocalypse arrives we will be right with our higher being.

In prayer - I'd like to take a moment to give thanks.
Thank You, yes YOU for staying being here in community with me, with Green Mom Green Baby. Thank you for your blessed return, for your devotion and loyalty. I've recently checked up on GMGB's stats and I'm grateful for the amount of readers showing up from all over the globe. And while Italy is lacking in numbers con diligenza Sono benedetto mamma del bambino verde verde :)

Eat.
Something that I must be present to and no longer deny is that my entire being, my temporary skin bag if you will is not of perfect health as of late.
There is no doubt that it's from all of the stress I've processed the past 12 months however some of the pain has been reoccurring for several years now.
Everything hurts.
Everything.
Everything has changed. I've had a conversation with my body and she feels as if she's on toxic overload. Whether it's old habits I'm trying to break, toxic relationships or plain old stress,
I know in my heart that if I go to a Dr. about my plight the same thing will happen.
The catscans, x-rays & blood work leave everyone guessing and me still doubled over in whatthehelliswrongwithmeville.

Sophia on the other hand has allergies yet to be diagnosed by her pediatrician.
The symptoms are cyclical since last spring, runny nose, sore throat then a massive cough that lasts for weeks and ends with Dr's orders for antibiotics. She's too young for the allergy medications and quite frankly I don't know that I want to keep her so pilled up.
When I suggested she be tested I got a prescript for a Sleep apnea.
I felt pissed off that the woman with the medical degree dishonored my mother's intuition.

So what's been coming up for me recently in meditation is the power of healing through nature. Can I get a drum roll for this hippy?
That being said I was lead to a book (Thank you Melissa Burda!)
called Crazy Sexy Diet by Kris Carr .
She's an amazing woman who let her rare form of cancer empower her rather than sit, Doctors orders waiting to see what her disease would or could do.
Now, it's my firm belief and my divine experience that books find us when we most need them. I certainly needed this. I'm empowered and have been writing and recommending friends with every page turn.
I'm so committed to changing my little one's diet so that her symptoms ease and mine lessen.

Kris's vegetarian/vegan way of healing has led her to peacefully coexist with her canSer (which she chooses to spell funny to poke fun at). As a newly recruited Wellness Warrior I am proud to say that today I was meatless once again. (YAY) but this is going to be a super challenge in order to really heal the issues that Sophia and I are experiencing.

In 2005 I participated in the Cosmic Cleanse at the Gayatri Institute, San Francisco with Christina McGold and the late Janna Wissler. Since that time I've carried the amazing experience and knowledge with me - about the benefits of not eating meat, drinking caffiene or alchohol and being more raw with my diet but I struggled with the why and the how.
Living here, in the heart of hunting and fishing hick land where everything is fried and stuck between bread served with a side of fries or potatoes a bud and one last helping of Nascar it's been more than difficult to maintain that sparkly, San Francisco progressive language let alone the lifestyle.

However, knowing that both Sophia and I could greater benefit from wiser food choices is making me put my damn foot down. I am going to lead by example and stand up for my daughter and I in the face of the rest of her family shoving fast food down her throat to gain her affection.
I'm going to look her too preoccupied to listen pediatriton in the face at her next check up and say antibiotics weren't necessary because mommy became a kitchen witch and cured her incessant cough.
Disclaimer: Within reason of course. I'd never deny Sophia the proper medical attention should her cough become worse or last more than a week.

So today I greet you with new resolve once again down this Green Mom Green Baby adventure.
I pray that in this moment I have shared an inspired you to pick up some new knowledge and to eat a little more greener and with a lot more conscious.
As Kris says, your mouth is your altar to your God pod.
You can have power over your being.

SOMETHING NEW

It's amazing.

When I started GreenMom Green Baby I was so enthused about writing a blog to inspire and learn about Green living among other Green mothers. With all my new found anxiety bringing Sophia into this world I was sure that this would pacify some of my worry about the carbon footprint we were making/leaving.

Fast-forward to now. My entire view of motherhood, the globe, my role as a mom and our lives have changed so unexpected and drastically.

When I set out on this venture I was naive yet hopeful.

I felt eager to learn, to share experience and of course to create community that all we could grow in and from.

Then personal crisis hit. I’ve avoided the blog for perhaps selfish reasons, careful not to air my dirty laundry or be a Devon downer or bitter blogger.

Now a (green) single mom recovering from being homeless, switching jobs, redefining family, moving (a lot) and accepting our ever evolving ‘situation’I'm still wondering:

Where in the hell do I, no, how the hell do I go from here?

Afraid to share our reality other than the power struggle Sophia and I battle with potty training, I woke up this morning knowing in my gut that this censorship is not authentic.

If other mom's suddenly find themselves without their partners, husbands or significant others, are next to or become homeless in the crazy economy than perhaps I could bring humor to our unique and trying 'green' situations.
Or maybe something similar has happened, and your story of transformation can help us or someone else cope.

And while I may have to plant trees in the next decade to make up for the boxes of tissues the little one and I have gone through this past year, I am recommitting Green Mom Green Baby to being a truly authentic ‘GREEN’ journey. I am being present whatever shows up for us in whatever form, shape and definition that means and I invite you to do the same.

So Green Mom Green Baby means, an environmentally and economically conscious new mom learning to cover a area of ground (motherhood & life) used for a purpose: learning and sharing and growing – TOGETHER.

On that note, thank you for your friendship, your readership and for sharing this space and your experience. I look forward to our journey and it's evolution.

Bah Blah Black Sheep!

Recently I've indulged in Russel Simmon's Super Rich.
It's a short read that definitely makes you think WOW - this book shall not be judged by it's cover.
At first glance you think it's just another mogul making a quick buck sharing some insider tips on how he got all his money.
WRONG.
Super Rich is an amazing, enlightening journey with Simmon's who shares how being a vegan yogi has opened up his mind, his heart and his world to being the richest man beyond any of the toys he's attainted being a rap or fashion player.
One thing that Simmon's offers is that no matter if you are a janitor or a CEO of a major company - you should approach your work as a prayer as a dedication to the universe and God.
AMEN.

Another thing that just I read this morning and really resonates with me lately is that we as American's should no longer be sheep. By that Simmon's discusses how "the corners" like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh have so many people living in fear which is dividing us as a people farther away from true community, from each other and most of all from LOVE.

It made me think of all the sheep lined up at the gas pumps not in arms about astronomical prices or how there is no real alternative to the economic and global fuel - mess we have gotten ourselves into other than a few hybrid cars by major corporations on the market.
Why aren't more of us arming ourselves with information or doing what we can to stop the madness?

It's 100% why I chose the new home for Sophia and I - 1/2 mile from work.
I no longer want to contribute to a war that our politicians are waving that has destroyed nations, people, families while lining the thick pockets of the oil powers that be.
Surely everyone thinks I'm "crazy" and insists to my face - that I can't "afford" my new digs but here's what I say:
I can't NOT afford this.
I can afford not moving somewhere two to three hundred dollars cheaper that's a dozen miles away only to put that money back into my ever thirsty gas tank.
I will afford not contributing to this mess - even if it's for a little while.
I choose not to be a sheep.
My new place also doesn't have a washer/dryer. But for a month I've gotten accustomed to a more gentler way of washing our clothes and I have to say that I'm excited to make that a prayer - thanking the universe that the elbow grease is also helping me burn calories and spend quality time with my daughter who gets a kick out of helping me.

There are ways around being in the herd people. We have to look harder.
Can we open up conversation with each other to really uncover ways to stop this reality we've hit?

Speaking of conversation - on another local level, I've asked my manager at work if we can become a more "Green" workplace. Well, the conversation is definitely open.
While no major changes have been made just yet it's at least a step toward possibility and in the right direction.

What can you do that will leave your kids proud of you?
Will you be a black sheep or will you become something with greater effect like a butterfly?

My Big Green Weekend!

Painfully green... to say the least. Let me explain.

First and foremost a friend and I have been diligently discussing our global impact and how we can make an even bigger difference. While she has made the vow to go Vegan I have taken a step back and said I'll make up for it in other ways. For example I'll be part time vegetarian and seek other green measures where I could use some improvement. This past week/weekend has forced me to be green in more ways than I could have possibly imagined.

Wednesday we woke to a lovely storm filled with snow and ice. Rather than use an chemically induced melt it took two days and several shifts which included boiling water and much sweat to get my car out of the driveway. Might I add that it also took a good samaritan with every piece of clothing labeled 'Ireland' to get the car out of the drive. Lucky Charm? Indeed.

While I kept my meat intake to a bare minimum I also started a Yoga practice which Sophia was happy to participate in. I'm sore. She's excited she has a new ball to play with.

Spring cleaning was a must. I mean, it seemed like I needed to perform such sacrifices to invite more sunshine into our cold winter woods. I do believe Equinox celebration and the Super Moon got into an affair and made some last minute chaos upstairs.

Reading old magazines getting ready for the recycling center I came across a blurb about disposable razors and how 2 Million of them a year clog our landfills. Bingo! I could perhaps cut back on my use of water and plastic by using an electric hair remover I had gotten a few holidays ago.
Embarking on this adventure, I knew that it would be painful. But I was excited to give it a go and brag to Devon about how my unveganism was bleeding into saving our planet with other heroic measures.
OUCH!
What seemed like two hours and a lot of pain later - I finished both legs which looked like a million bees sought revenge on a brother that I swatted to death years ago. OY. But success. I did it - dare I go further?
Yes. Unfortunately - I did.
Needless to say my armpits are bloody and a giant painful mess at the moment. When I did yoga this morning I could feel the instructor pointing and laughing at me through the flat screen. While my adventure in being green was promising it was nothing short of painful. But alas - no guts no glory eh?

Money is super tight these days.
As a parent, as a part of this economic reality and as gas prices continue to grow I know that I wish it grew on trees. But until we can see more green in our economy we need to do some of our own homework making ends me where we can.

Recently, I've become privy to a new website that will help any and everyone whip their budget into shape. LearnVest has programs via email to help track spending, cut your household costs and perhaps know where you should invest. This website is truly amazing.

FAST FOOD NATION

As a parent, have you seen this film? Have you read this book?
Do you cringe at the thought of your child begging you to bring them to the golden arches?

Visiting San Francisco, I learned that the political community wants to ban the Happy Meal toys.
I got it.

I get it.

I've asked the community that helps me to raise my daughter to please ease up on the fast food visits.
Why this hurts anyone's feelings is beyond me. I'm simply stating my wish for my daughters relationship with food. In this particular region, it's hard to find great healthy alternative choices other than anything that is meat and potatoes - as the core.

But reading this article this morning gives me hope. There is a collective consciousness that is coming together for the great of our children and the good of the earth.

I've borrowed the following from Mother Nature Network:

Founder Stephen Sidwell and CEO Mike Roberts recently announced plans to launch LYFE ("Love Your Food Everyday") Kitchen, a transformational, socially responsible "lyfestyle" brand that will open in Palo Alto, Calif., this summer.

Roberts, who previously oversaw more than 31,000 McDonald's restaurants in 118 countries, resigned as president and chief operating officer of the fast-food empire in 2006. He was approached by Sidwell, an investment banker, and the two agreed that the time was ripe for a healthy fast-food option.

Of course, if the food doesn't taste good, nobody will buy it — no matter how well it's branded. To complete that part of the puzzle, Roberts and Sidwell turned to Chef Art Smith, former personal chef to Oprah Winfrey and a two-time James Beard Foundation Award winner. They also brought on Chef Tal Ronnen, regarded as one of the most groundbreaking vegan and vegetarian chefs.

"With two celebrated, taste-making chefs and a talented team of leaders and advisers, we believe LYFE Kitchen is a response to one of America's most significant, unmet needs: the consumer's demand for delicious, affordable food that is good for you," said Roberts. "We also plan to become a part of the Palo Alto community and begin giving back right away."

According to the release, no item on the menu will contain more than 600 calories, with each featuring responsibly sourced ingredients from local farms and "sustainable whenever possible."

"Every decision we make — from using eco-friendly building and packaging materials, to ingredients we source, to providing an engaged service team and partnering with local nonprofits — will engage and inspire our guests, and ultimately, have a tremendous impact," explained Sidwell.

If all goes well, the chain is rumored to have plans to spread nationally with as many as 250 locations in the next five years.

Excited? Personally, this sounds like the first "real" healthy fast-food chain to come along in some time. While having some former McDonald's executives on board (their chief communications officer is also a former 20-year veteran of the company), isn't without some irony, it makes perfect business sense. Why not build a new healthy fast-food empire using the lessons and experienced garnered from the previous?

We'll find out just how successful the new menu is this summer. Till then, vegan and vegetarians hoping for some quick food options while on the road can remain optimistic.

Want to give a huge shout out to my parents who reluctantly then diligently started pulling all the plugs on appliances /phones/computers while not in use.
Their electric bill has dropped $60 even over christmas.
WOO HOO!

And to baby girl who sat twice on the potty Saturday - but hasn't since.
It's a step in the right direction -no?

Creating Tradition

Dear Green Parents,

It has been suggested that I create ritual/ tradition with Sophia for the next few holidays of the year so that she becomes grounded in the absence of her father.

Honestly - I don't have tradition for any holiday.
Christmas was new this year to me too.
For her birthday I am taking her to Disney - but I don't know if that "tradition" will hold up over time.
Easter, I am not sure where on the continent we will land.

Do you have any suggestions or would you like to share your tradition with us?

Holiday Greens & Blues

It's officially official.
I'm a single Green Mom.
And while it's probably the best medicine for everyone considering the circumstances
I can't say that it doesn't keep me awake at night or leave me wondering if I'm going to be able to do this all alone.
Yes, I'm completely capable.
Yes, Sophia is the best thing that's ever happened to me.
While obviously in the makings for months, and after trying to patch things up - I've never separated from someone I've had a child with before.
Another Green Mom first.
As I try to think of Green Holiday tips, I keep coming up...Blue.

I know I'm not the only one in the world that this has ever happened to. I know that we all have our stories. I'm getting a lot of advice from a lot of people that I think is completely over the top - but then again I'm not sure because I'm a little overwhelmed.
Is there a handbook out there for this?

We can beat hoarding & waste. Start this Xmas!

Consumption. It's what we do.
It's how we move about holiday to holiday, occasion to another reason to buy....something.
This sale, this deal, that bargain, Black Friday.
Buy, sell, BUY, SELL.

Having Sophia and witnessing the large amounts of toys, used an not used is quite a lesson in stuff.
Moving from a three bedroom condo into one tiny room has taught me another lesson....to lessen our stuff.
Not to mention the new addiction I have to watching Hoarders.
The one show that shines the light on someone else's chaos and madness if not for just an hour of my time - could I be...yes - maybe....I am... normal.

But the one thing that I'm really taking in from all of this learning- peppered in with news reports screaming of upcoming spending retail holiday forecasts is -
we love stuff.

I have to ask myself the same thing that the professionals on hoarders ask:
What room if any in our lives does it truly serve?
Especially now, this holiday season when most of us and our friends and families are in need of so much more than things.

Let's think about this alternatively shall we?

I know that some of us, our friends, family and neighbors could actually use the $10 you might spend on slippers at Walmart to put toward their next gallon of milk.

What about the frazzled mommy who doesn't really need a new scarf - perhaps she could use an hour or two of your time to have some peace to run overdue errands or just to be by herself.

Perhaps sharing dinner or holiday tea with loved ones and creating memories instead of more
mess is really what we need.

Why not create a true and meaningful conversation about what a person really wants then suggesting to others to pitch in and get it. If you all can't afford the entire thing - a gift card with monies toward the said present is huge effort. Not only does it show that people are listening but that care was given.

Think of all the waste wrapping paper and gift boxes create? Where does that stuff end up? Why?
So that we are enamored for a day or two or worse yet - not at all because you're Aunt who always gives you crappy gifts still gives crappy gifts.

What if you put your foot down and sent an email to family saying that this holiday season you'd like to concentrate on celebration rather than the gift giving part. Or ask what it is someone truly needs.
Maybe the entire family could get together in effort to help another family in need pay a heating or utility bill.

You get my point.

Could we possibly ever move away from needing so much STUFF? DO WE?
Could we open our hearts and minds and create a bigger and better conversation that takes us away from the obsession of obtaining material things and lends us to developing deeper relationships between our loved ones, friends and ourselves within our community?

I may be late on the "Story of Stuff" train, but with everything I've mentioned above, it's worth plugging right now.

Proceed with Caution

I suppose that the only reason I'm finding the time to write tonight is because
I'm not crying and my daughter is .....finally asleep.

Our new living arrangement is nothing short of stressful. And while I'm in complete gratitude of my family's love and support of me, my daughter and this entire situation - being here obviously comes with a whole new ballgame.

My daughters behavior has changed radically. I can't say that I blame her.
I for the most part do everything I can NOT to act out every day but I'm the adult.
She on the other hand has an obsession with my parents dog and closing doors.
If she's not chasing Molly around the house she's closing any and every door that's open. I never had to say don't or no so much before. But now that I'm actually having to discipline her, she's not listening to me - at all.
If I raise my voice in an effort to be firm so that she will pay attention she will run to my parents and tell them "Mommy's being bad."

This past week Sophia has begged me to go home. She doesn't want to be here. I don't blame her. I don't either.
My parents are set in their ways. They have a peculiar way of communicating that is relatively loud and sounds a lot like fighting. My father also has a really weird relationship with the dog - to which, I'm pretty positive Sophia is now emulating.

Correcting her or trying to talk with her about her change in behavior is up for critique at any moment. Intense.

Not having her for two days while she stays with her father is painful.
Being away from her in general breaks my heart. And if I'm in turmoil over everything I can't imagine what her confused little brain is going through.
But I am not letting that be an excuse for her to behave badly. She's still two. She still needs to learn respect right?

Tonight took the cake.

Not only did she not listen every time I asked her to leave the dog alone - she would look at me and push more or step on the dogs paw harder. Just an example of the handful of things she was doing but as I was putting her down - she screamed at me
that I was a crazy bitch.

On a positive note, I'm happy to report that she gets really excited to recycle with me. I took her to the recycling center last week and she was so happy to help me put the stuff in all the right places.
At least I'm raising her to be environmentally friendly. But I'm stuck in a situation that is not going to get better for a while and I don't know how or where to buy the handbook for this.

When The Going Gets Tough.

Times are hard. Things have come undone in every facet of our family life.

As a Green (new) parent, I'm wondering how to keep my autonomy and individuality as an adult and a mother because Sophia and I are moving into my parents home.

I'm filled with doubt, with fear.
Both of which come from my parents overbearing love to see me do the right thing
- their way.

I'm having a difficult time potty training because baby girl has anxiety from the car accident(s) she was in over the summer as previously noted. Thinking socialization in daycare may help not letting her run all over our rental with no diaper on. (really looking forward to getting my deposit back)

Don't get me wrong, I feel as if I'm pretty solid in my parenting skills. I've even gotten MacGyver-ish MOM tendencies at this point - but when you are around older adults who are constantly surveying and inputting and critiquing you as a parent you want to pull your hair out.

So how do I keep my sanity and mom my pants in place when I'm living among my own parents?
I would never disrespect them by counting out their opinion - but how do I politely stand my own Mommy ground with them?

What are your thoughts? Suggestions? From one mom to another?

Green To Potty Train

It's that time - at least, that's what my folks are putting the pressure on me to do - Potty train.

I've been talking with Sophia about it and she cries.

When I change her diaper, she cries.

She used to tell me before if she was wet or made a "poop" but now, she just runs, hides and cries.
I told her I'd buy her a bike after bringing out the potty, sitting it in the living room and explaining to her the duties of both she and it. "No." She said.

One camp says she'll let ME know when she's ready. Another is saying it's better to force her so that she can go to day care. I'm at a loss - throwing my hands in the air because if anything - I feel as if she's regressing - perhaps because of the car accident and the anxiety she now has from it.

Any suggestions or tips on how you got your little one or are succeeding at the potty training game?

Much appreciated. OH and this is NOT my daughter - we never get this close without her FREAKING OUT.

Is your summer green?

Weather's been hot. Our ocean was comprimised. Some places are flooded while others are in drought.

What have you been doing this summer beyond your weekly recycling to help mother earth?

To teach your children?

I just returned from my 'weekly deposit' at the recycling center and I'm thrilled that when we pulled up my 2 and a half year old screamed "Mom! Recycling! YEAH!"

She clapped.

In the blink of an eye, EVERYTHING can change.

Today my Sophia was in a car accident.
If you saw it, or perhaps were held up in traffic over the whole thing or
maybe if caught a glimpse of the car, your jaw would drop.

The car my daughter was in was rear ended
the passenger side (in which SHE was sitting)
was demolished.

The drivers seat - is twisted & facing the opposite direction.
Her father is in a lot of pain.

I pulled shards of glass from her hair, her tee shirt & diaper.
However, Sophia does not have a scratch.

Amen to this kids amazing resilience.

I have no words for how grateful I am now that the shock of the day has finally subsided.
Wishing I could make some stinking joke or link to an article about how to recycle the broken parts of the car ....but I can't.

I heard the whole thing on the telephone.
I heard the car hit, Sophia scream and cry & my coworker run to
the car to make sure she was ok.

I'm still teary eyed and definitely counting my blessings.

She sings to me - Mommy, wish that air-pranes in the night sky ...like shooting stars.....
really use a wish right now, wish right now.

Oil Oil Everywhere

Separation Anxiety

I feel as if I am a warrior at this now.
Phia wakes up 5..FIVE.. out of 7 nights a week.
I know... B.R.U.T.A.L
Without fail - at 3 or 4am.

She cries like someone's come to take her away or she just found out Santa or the Disney Castle wasn't real.
It's nuts.

But I can soothe her like a champ now. At least four minutes max.

Sometimes, in certain circles - I'm not sure if it - this - separation anxiety is indeed a phase
like her Doctor said - that it comes with her age and will pass....

So - other than implying that Mommy needs a good night sleep I thought I'd put it out there
Does anyone else experience this issue? Know someone or heard of this?
If so - I'd love to know your thoughts or how you coped/are coping.

On Being a Green Mom

Green Mom Green Baby - is not just about being good to our mother earth - it's about being "new" to being a mom/parent too - Green to the job. Getting our feet wet with the experience of life - really.

So while Earth day has come and gone -and my little one playing in a drum circle someday became a reality (no joke).... other things have come to pass that I wanted to open the GreenMom forum to.

Since my daughter has turned 2, I'm starting to understand discipline and encouragement and constant negotiating at full throttle.
The day of her birthday - at her party - she threw a tantrum in front of everyone that was wicked - something she's never done prior. It was both ironic and horrific at the same time. Five months later, I've witnessed and participated in several of them that have surfaced. With that said, I think I came to some great conclusions that work for my terrible two - year I mean, little girl
1. counting to three
2. taking deep breaths or
3 negotiate all options until one of us breaks and Time Out is called.
(Time out is sometimes for mommy.....too)

Last week, I flew with my family to California for a wedding.
A five hour plane ride + 2.5 hourish car ride to and from the airport was not making me too excited for our little vacay. I have negotiated through some serious screaming with my little one and I wasn't too keen on the idea of it maybe happening miles over the earth. Sigh.
Out of the five hours to LA - only the last twenty minutes did people in the back row know that she was even on the plane. She did great until our descent and when her ears popped there was no turning back.
People were holding their ears shut. My heart pounded.
Sophia also didn't understand the concept of waiting our turn to get off the plane.
Not too bad.
On the way back she didn't make a peep. Not one. The gentlemen to my left smiled and asked me how I did it.
The passengers both behind and in front of us commented how great she was too.
WHEW.

So when we came home - and jet lag set in - it must have really set in.
My wee one barked like a dog for twenty minutes.
Jokingly I put a bowl of water on the floor and she went for it.
I found it not only to be silly - but creative and intelligent on her part. She's two and imitating, acting if you will. I did however negotiate with the puppy however when I wanted Sophia back.
It took some practice but worked. I was amazed.

When I later mentioned the event to my parents they were shocked an apphauled that I encouraged her to behave like that.

I thought it was giving her freedom. She wasn't hurting herself or anyone. In fact, she was experimenting in dynamics that had nothing to do with tears or me trying to talk her off that baby ledge.

So that's my story - I'm wondering how you are doing - GREEN MOM with discipline and creativity and positive criticism from parental units and loving your baby - your child.

Blessed is she who endures and sustains us.

You know - there are so many “Green” things we can be doing – companies and products that have bitten the Eco friendly tag line but really are a croc.

At the market yesterday I was thinking about our Earth Mother, the upcoming celebration of her "day" vs. our mass consumption.

So there are so many “Green” things we can be doing even better–but I get bummed at companies and products that have bitten the Eco friendly tag line but really are a croc.

Yesterday - I desperately needed wipes for my baby’s blue bottom and before me on the stores shelf were only a few choices - all contained in unrecyclable plastic bins that were double wrapped in plastic covering or small, thick, NON biodegradable bags.

Kudos to all the kid/ eco friendly non bleach diapers – but what about the containers the rest of the assets for our kids you know – doody box? UGH.

Does anyone have a great repurpose trick for the plastic wipe boxes? I broke down and bought one and fear its life in the landfill.

On a lighter note - walk as much as you can today – or run. Enjoy the vehicle which nutures us in ways we should never take for granted.

Go outside and dance.

Who cares if anyone is watching?

Complex global issues won't be solved entirely through personal action. The recession means each of us has a pocketbook stake in the development of an economy which goes lighter on the planet's limited natural resources and our household budgets. Translation, LEANER IS GREENER.

Where to start?

1) Cut back at home. Food & shelter represent the lion's share of your budget & use of resources.

They are your most essential expenditures.

Here's a basic question: are you in too much home? There's a direct relationship between your environmental footprint, monthly budget & the square footage of your living space.

Could you do with less?

Take a look at the money you spend on food. If you are too dependent on eating out and use convenient prepared foods from the grocery - try relearning the gentle art of meal planning. Cooking at home is the fast track to saving money and healthier nutrition.

2) Reduce the amount of energy you use.

The obvious things include:

eliminating unnecessary lighting (particularly outdoors); refitting with CFL bulbs;

installing water-saving shower heads and giving your water heater the once-over;

and sealing energy-robbing leaks around doors and windows.

3) Trim your transportation.

Save a few dollars & reduce your overall footprint by leaving the car in the driveway whenever possible. If you're not already familiar with your community's public transportation, find a bus or train schedule and see how mass transit might fit into your weekly routine.

Better yet, start walking or cycling your short errands. Bicycles are much cheaper to operate per mile than automobiles, and the health benefits of regular light exercise will save you money in the long term, too.

4) Ditch the disposables.

The word disposable in a product description should be a red flag.

Paper plates, plastic knives and forks, disposable pens, paper towels, throw-away food storage containers — opt for reusable items, instead. This will take some thought & discipline on your part. But giving up a little convenience can save hundreds of dollars a year.

While you're at it, try to buy in bulk (as storage allows) to reduce the amount of packaging in your waste stream. Now that reduced demand has kicked the bottom out of the recycling sector, you'll also be doing your local sanitation department a favor.

5) Grow some food.

During the Second World War, about 45 percent of all vegetables consumed at home came from victory gardens. It's time to revive this practice. Not only will you save money, you'll reduce the energy expended to bring food to the table. Obviously, not everyone is in a position to start a few rows of beans and tomatoes in the back yard. But consider at least growing your own herbs or a few small vines in pots and window boxes. Your community may also have a few shared urban gardens.

6) Talk, share, communicate.

Perhaps the best thing you can be doing is talking to others. We've spent decades becoming a society of isolated consumers, slowly forgetting the skills which got previous generations through tough times. Do you know how to sew? Teach someone else.

Cooking from scratch — not just warming up something frozen from the store — has been lost on the microwave generation. If you need a refresher, locate a cooking class or start helping an old hand in the kitchen.

Learn to fix things: your local community college probably offers carpentry courses, and home improvement stores frequently host weekend classes on all kinds of useful skills.

Ask questions and share what you know with others. Together, we'll get by.

And we'll help build greener and more sustainable communities for the future.

Green Your Spring Cleaning!

With the temperature getting warm

and the crazy amount of snow we got not so long ago

now melting...

You know as well as I do that

SPRING IS IN THE AIR!

Which means, it's time to get cleaning people.

But don't grab your keys for a trip to Target to stock up on supplies filled with chemicals that are truly unnecessary for our planet.

Just snoop around your house for some GREENER cleaning ingredients and make the solutions yourself. You'll save time, gas and the planet in the process.

I've scoured the net for the best Green Cleaning recipes. Here they are:

All-Purpose Cleaner

1/2 tsp washing soda 

A dab of liquid soap 

2 cups hot tap water 

Combine in a spray bottle.

Shake until the washing soda has dissolved. Apply & wipe with a sponge or rag.

(If you're out of washing soda, use 2 1/2 tsp of borax)

Window Cleaner

1/4-1/2 tsp liquid detergent 

3 tbs vinegar 

2 cups water 

spray bottle

Put ingredients into bottle, shake. Use as you would a commercial brand. The soap in this recipe is important. It cuts the wax residue from the commercial brands you might have used in the past.

Creamy Soft Scrubber

Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into a bowl.

Add enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frosting. Scoop the mixture onto a sponge, and wash the surface. This is the perfect recipe for cleaning the bathtub because it rinses easily and doesn't leave grit.

NOTE: Add 1 tsp of vegetable glycerin to the mixture and store in a sealed glass jar, to keep the product moist. Otherwise, just make as much as you need at a time.

Oven Cleaner

1 cup or more baking soda water A squirt or two of liquid detergent. Sprinkle water generously over the bottom of the oven. Cover the grime with enough baking soda that the surface it totally white. Sprinkle some more water over the top, then let the mixture set overnight.

You can easily wipe up the grease the next morning because the grime will have loosened. When you have cleaned up the worst of the mess, dab a bit of liquid detergent or soap on a sponge, and wash the remaining residue from the oven. If this recipe doesn't work for you it is probably because you didn't use enough baking soda and/or water.

Mold Killer

2 teaspoons tea tree oil 

2 cups water

Combine in a spray bottle, shake to blend, and spray on problem areas. Do not rinse.

Furniture Polish

1/2 tsp oil, such as olive (or jojoba, a liquid wax) 1/4 cup vinegar or fresh lemon juice

What's a Green Mom to do with TOO MANY TOYS?

Trapt in a winter storm will do a lot to a person.

Because being in the house this long is starting to drive me a bit stir crazy.

Especially since the house is really starting to be overrun with

Sophia's toys.

I've tried my best to make it clear to friends and family not to send stuffed animals or toys with batteries for her - that we are all set when it comes to things to play with. Plus a lot of purchases if you don't read labels contain toxins, or can't be recycled.

I was trying to avoid all of that.

As I mentioned in a previous blog, it's not that we are not grateful for the gifts, it was just my fear of the overwhelming amount of STUFF jamming up our day to day then living forever in a landfill somewhere.

But, unfortunately - for everyone I threw a birthday party for her 2nd year (never again)

and now...

we are up to our ears in stuff that she's not even playing with.

Of course, as a good Green Mom - I don't want to just throw these amazing things away. However, I know that she will not get to half of them. Too many things to play with overwhelm all of us.

We currently have four boxes of stuffed animals that she doesn't even consider because she's in love with "Tiffany Dog" - a stuffed Dalmation she got her first Christmas.

I researched a bit online for what to do to alleviate some of our stuffed and plastic pain.

I'm not really excited about the results I've found so far - so I'm asking one Green Mom to another - WHAT TO DO YOU DO WITH TOO MANY TOYS?

Until I hear from you - here's a list of what I came up with so far:

Tips on Recycling Toys (From Earth 911)

You normally can’t just drop your unwanted toys in your curbside program bin. Toys are often comprised of several different materials, making them difficult to recycle.

Share the Love!

The best option is to reuse them:

Pass them along to other children in your family.
Donate to a local charity, school or church.
Check local hospitals. Some accept stuffed animals and other toys.
Repair broken toys instead of throwing them out.
Make some money. Try selling your toys online or at a yard sale.

E-Waste

If electronic toys are irreparably damaged, they should be recycled with other e-waste.

Batteries

Always remember to recycle the batteries used in your child’s toys.

Rechargeable batteries still contain heavy metals, but they last longer.
Look for batteries that contain less mercury and heavy metals.
If you must toss your batteries, dispose of them properly with a household hazardous waste (HHW) or similar program.
There are many different kinds of batteries, and they require different disposal procedures.

PVC

Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is often used in toy manufacturing. It is sometimes tricky to recycle PVC, but you can use Earth911 to find the nearest drop-off location.

If you are in a wintery prison cell - like Moi

-the dry heat in your house or the bitter temperatures outside could be wrecking your skin!

For me, washing hands every time I have to change

a diaper is drying out my hands like all get out!

So I've realized however that if you water down your anti bacterial soap - not only will the solution be less aggressive on your skin but you'll make the stuff last a wee bit longer than just taking it right to the recycling center and buying more when you hit the last pump.

I haven't posted recently - one of the major reasons being

Sophia had been sick and - that was my first time beyond teething that

she was in so much pain and discomfort that I wanted to cry.

So of course it got me thinking......

Because I DO NOT want to have this happen again - nor do I want to spend more down time with illness in the house - I thought it would be good to share some love and light on some preventative medicine that's prescription free.

DO NOT GO TO WORK the next time you feel sick. Why?

Fewer sick people = less medicine = fewer chemicals that'll find their way into nature
(plus, the more synthetic medicines we take, the stronger bugs get).
The average commute is 16 miles each way - staying home helps you avoid gridlock and decreases your CO2 output. Even the school dean could appreciate that.
Calling in sick doesn't always mean losing your pay - companies in the United States allow an average of 8 sick days per year and you usually lose 'em at the end of the year - so use 'em.
Not getting the stink eye
from your coworkers (we're sure they'll happily reschedule that budget meeting over risking getting your disease).

NOW If it's too late and you feel a tickle in your throat and chest

might I suggest the homemade natural meds that may be right in your kitch or just a hop skip and jump away at the local grocery store - again still less expensive and better for your body and the environment.

GARLIC - is a natural expectorant of mucus and is great for your blood. Eat it raw or in eggs or juice it with tomato and carrot.

LEMON - for your scratchy throat.

Decaf Green Tea - the warmth will help you fight off the chills and the brew is good for your blood plus less caffeine means a good night sleep.

MOMMIES ONLY - if you are feeling a bit under the weather - do not share the following recipe with your little ones 0- enjoy a cup when your partner puts the baby down.

HOT TODDIE - Decaf Green Tea, a shot of whiskey (will help with your throat) lemon and a squeeze of fresh orange for a little bit of sweet. Stay away from too much honey or sugar as it will help create more Flem in your system

Hang Yours Up to dry

Instead of using your dryer which is reported to cost .35 a load - use your clothes line, porch or dry rack and save on emissions and mulah.

Note: In 2007 54.72 million metric tons of greenhouse gas-producing CO2 came from US dryers.

Hit the Farmers Market

Buying local not only supports the local economy folks but it's better for the planet.

If you don't have a sunday morning hodgepodge of organic goods near you - you can still buy local at the grocery store. Check out USDA - everything you'd ever want to know about COOL (Country Of Orgin Labels foods that require COOL and ones that don't.

Walk it out

Walking with your family or friends promotes great health, uses less gas to get to your destination and helps you take advantage of .....SUMMER.

Build A Fort

Forget the cardboard castles or running to home depot to spend your hard earned cash on a tree house ....help your children use their imagination with some blankets, tarp and crazy outfits and spend a day where the wild things are.

Take a hike

You know, you too can take advantage of local parks and sites - they are not just for tourists you know.

Just be sure to pack your recyclable water bottles and a lunch.

Movie night

Rent a projector or borrow a friends. Invite everyone. Show your favorite movie or a handful of them beneath the stars outside against your house and poof - your own magical drive in minus the cars!

August 1st,

Lughnasadh.

Lughnasadh marks the beginning of the harvest season, the ripening of first fruits, and was traditionally a time of community gatherings, market festivals, horse races and reunions with distant family and friends

Tradition also holds ritual cutting of the grain with a scythe or crescent-shaped knife and drying husks to make corn dollies.

So How can you and your family celebrate?

Why not make a special loaf of bread to eat & be grateful for the abundance of summer harvest.

Spend the day outdoors, hold a picnic or invite neighbors and friends to play volleyball & games.

Be sure to take in the summer sun, be thankful for the harvest it makes and remind everyone to honor the seasonal/natural cycle. I'm excited to continue to share more Earth holidays as the wheel of the year keeps turning.

GMGB: How long have you been Vegan/Vegetarian (why?)

ARIANE: My parents stopped eating meat when I was a child for both health & political reasons, so it has never really been a part of my day to day food habits.

I learned early on that there are many protein sources outside of land animals, but- though I am 100% raw and have been for nearly a year- I am technically a pescatarian. Which means, I eat fish (wild, local when possible) b/c 92% of vegans are seriously deficient in B12 and Omega 3/6/9, and I strive to have a diet that is nutritionally complete without supplements.

I also occasionally add raw eggs to smoothies and soups b/c eggs have more absorbable protein than any of food, at 95% absorbtion. Most proteins, such as beef or soy, are less than 50% absorbed by the body.

Every once in a while I eat raw dairy cheese, but I mostly try to avoid supprting the dairy industry at all.

GMGB: What inspired you to create RawkNRoll Cuisine?

ARIANE: I was making raw meals for a couple people I met through my management job at Juliano's in LA, and they suggested packaging my food. It was an unemployment project that happened to take off very, very quickly.

Basically, I started out buying prepared raw foods, but couldn't afford them, so I decided to create a line of raw/vegan/organic snacks that are accessible to everyone who wants to eat raw/healthy, not only those of us with money to burn. Seriously, $9 for a bag of chips just isn't viable for most people.

Even at my $5.99 price point ($5 online), it can seem steep, but that was the least I could charge and still make a small profit, given the cost of raw/organic ingredients.

GMGB: How would you like to lead the Rawvolution?

ARIANE: First, I'd say I have begun to do so by growing as a company and acquiring a progressively larger staff, all of whom are proud to be working for a line of health food products that are ecologically sound.

As for the future, my ulitimate goal with my brand is to be in stores NOT in the raw section, as merely a healthy choice that standard American diet eaters have.

GMGB: As you know our nations kids are obese.

How would you/could you inspire others to change this situation?

ARIANE: The responsibility, I believe, lies completely with parents. I grew up with a mother who bought wheat berries to grind into flour to make bread.

While I understand that is scarcely an option with today's busy lives, there is ALWAYS time to make a healthier choice.

Don't feed your children food that will kill them! If it's neon, if it will outlast a World War- just put it back on the shelf.

Your child will eventually forget s/he wanted it. Incorporate as many fresh, healthy choices as possible into your and your family's diet, and you will lose your taste for chemicals.

GMGB: If someone were wanting to make the lifestyle change from carnivore to vegetarian/vegan, what would you recommend for a good transition?

Any tips for longevity?

ARIANE: The tortoise wins the race... no one, or at least, very few people, stick with something they change suddenly and completely. Begin by changing out one meal a day from meat based to plant based.

When you have grown comfortable with that, replace two meals, and onward. Be cautious with labels, though- I am extremely opposed to most meat substitutes. They have so many chemicals and additives usually, you are better off eating the real thing. Rather than switching from meat to fake meat, transition to foods made from produce, nuts, or seeds.

On the issue of protein however, pound for pound, kale has more than beef, so you really don't need to worry. And my food is proof that kale can taste good!

GMGB: How can others join the the Rawvolution?

ARIANE: One word: locavorism.

If you live near a farmer's market, go religiously.

Buy as many of your groceries there as you can.

If you are concerned about prices, go late, when farmers generally provide copious discounts b/c they don't want to treck everything home.

Look at labels at the grocery store, and when you don't know which brand to pick, choose the one made closer to you.

Personally, the great bulk of what I eat is organic produce from the local markets, but I know I am lucky to live in a part of the country where strawberries never go out of season.
Choosing organics when possible is of course an important step, but if the cost of organic groceries is too much for you, just choose wisely; berries utilize up to 50 lbs of pesticides per acre, whereas nuts are scarcely sprayed at all.
Lastly, help save the planet and your body by buying as little as possible that involves cans, styrofoam, excessive packaging, etc.

These foods are rarely good for your body or soul, and they are detrimental to the atmosphere.

My favorite part of the raw food movement is that not only am I treating my self as well as possible, I am making as minimal an impact on the planet as anyone living in modern society could hope for.

what ever or where ever it is you are going to celebrate,

you CAN do it GREEN!

If you're headed to the BEACH....here's a greener way to catch some rays with your family.

Do not bring plastic.

According to our friends at The GreenGuide.com

During the last international coastal cleanup organized by nonprofit Ocean Conservancy, nearly 7 million pounds of debris—more than 40 percent of it plastic—were collected by volunteers. This included

1.3 million plastic bags,

nearly 1 million food containers and wrappers,

close to 940,000 caps and lids,

roughly 710,000 plastic bottles,

500,000 straws and stirrers,

and just over 440,000 plastic utensils.

By many expert accounts, plastic debris sailing the oceans is responsible for the death of more than a million seabirds and 100,000 mammals & sea turtles annually. Plastic pieces are often found in the stomachs of dead ocean-going beasts.

Solution: Instead of bottled drinks & disposable plates & cutlery, use a re-usable thermos,

& pack in re-usable dishes, knives, forks, and spoons—

at the beach and for all other outings, picnics, and barbeques.

Put the Butt OUT!

During coastal cleanup, volunteers found more than 3.2 million cigarette butts and filters.

If you have to smoke, don’t leave evidence.

Stick to organic sunscreens, cosmetics, and insect repellent:

Research has shown that some sunscreen compounds suspected to be endocrine disruptors are finding their way into fish tissue. Scientists have said some of these could alter reproductive function and birth weight in fish. Not all ultraviolet filters have harmful materials, but to be safe, try to use natural ingredients. The possible synergistic human health & environmental affects of residue from the hundreds of chemical compounds in cosmetics & personal care products give water quality experts a real fright.

Pack out trash: Not only is trash & food waste on the beach an eyesore that can end up suffocating sealife, it attracts birds and wildlife that end up defecating on the sand contributing to the already problematic sewage problem, says Nancy Stoner, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s clean water project.

Dispose of trash in lidded bins, or if those are not available, containing the trash and packing it out yourself.

No leaky diapers: "When it says swim diaper, that doesn't mean [the waste is] self contained,” Stoner said. “I know this from personal experience.

Plastic pants are the way to go.

Capture stormwater and keep things clean at home:

If you can, think about replacing impervious surfaces such as asphalt with more water-absorbing surfaces such as gravel, garden, or lawn. A relatively easy way to reduce storm-water runoff is to redirect the downspouts from your rain gutters from impervious surfaces (your driveway or sidewalk) to your yard. And if you have impervious surfaces, keep them clean, free of oil, gas, and other pollutants.

“Lots of people run [storm-water] out into the driveway,” said Stoner. “They think they are getting rid of storm-water by discharging it to a pipe but it may flow to the beach.”

Using natural fertilizers will help reduce the amount of chemicals, nitrogen, & phosphorus entering waterways, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These compounds en masse can cause ocean algal blooms. When these blooms die, they suck oxygen out of the water, sometimes killing the fish and oceanlife that need it, creating a dead zone.

YESTERDAY.....

The sun was OUT. Finally!

Let's be honest, it's been days. Days I say!

So after dinner, I was anxious to get my family off their butts and outside - not only to enjoy the light shining in the sky but to burn off some energy too.

My partner and I took our daughter by her hands and went for a slow stroll pointing out the birds, the three brown rabbits, the trees

...then we started to play that game that our parents played with us, every ten or fifteen steps, we'd gently lift her off the ground and yell - WEEEEEEE!

....Until Shawn heard a pop and began to panic.

The baby was ok and I was confused.

What was happening to family time?

He said he thought her shoulder was dislocated -

that it happened to his brother as a baby - often.

We scooped her up, brought her back to the house and noticed she wouldn't

grab her bottle with her left hand so we hopped in the car and raced to the ER.

X rays.

Crying. Snot. Ugh.

Snot. Sobbing.

One last X ray.

OY.

All in all - she' was /is perfectly ok - the DR. said that it was NURSEMAIDS ELBOW -

that it

happens frequently in children under 4 -

and that most likely she popped it back in herself.

But it's nothing I ever heard of or want myself or my daughter to experience again.

So I am writing to keep it real with you - even with my best intention to get my

time with family in nature & sunshine there I was, learning - jaw agape.

My daughter is showing me a whole new world and

thinking that she's a tuff little tyke to play such games -

I need to perhaps slow it down and wait for her to let me know when she's ready.

We know, it's not really your fault. It's mostly our own & perhaps just a tad of the last administrations.

So here's how we're all going to pitch in

to save $ & this precious resource!

Sing it with me...I can drive 55!

Every 5 mph over 60 you drive = paying an additional .24 per gallon for gas! Staying the speed limit saves!

Don't blow hot air!

A tire 20% under inflation is consuming an extra 10% of fuel. Check your owners manual & inflate/deflate accordingly.

Don't Be an Aggressive Driver.

This will lower your stress level & gas mileage by as much as 33%.

Go with the flow of traffic and life. Breathe.

Slowly accelerate from stops & don't be shy about using cruise control to maintain a constant speed.

Don't be Proud of the Junk in your Trunk.

Well, for every 100lbs in your car, your fuel efficiency

is reduced by 1-2%. Get rid of dead weight already!

I said it Before and I'll say it again, Don't Idle.

10 seconds & more of this uses more gas than restarting your engine.

So take that fact to the drive thru window at Dunkin Donuts and pass it on.

Tune In & Tune UP!

You must maintain your engine properly or it can lower your MPG by 4%.

Get a Good Lube Job.

Using the wrong grade of oil costs your fuel efficiency 2%. Make sure you know which grade to feed your four wheels.

I have contact dermatitis.

An infection of the skin from harsh (cleaning)chemicals,

change in laundry detergent (some brand on sale I bought), perfume (totally splurged on a new scent),

sunscreen(also new) and just about yeah -

everything single item that I changed up last week.

Antibiotics are seeing me through,

which also end up making me feel....well, sick.

I can't sleep, I have NO appetite and I'm super parched.

I went to the Dr - of course to ensure I couldn't give whatever I was going through wouldn't be passed on to Sophia. That would be the worst.

Can anyone suggest a greener way of dealing with this?

I'm soaking in peroxide....once a day....till my skin clears up.

Gross.

In speaking with some old friends on Saturday night

I was shocked when two of the healthiest people that I know

(marathon runners, total image of health)

admitted out loud that they indeed have not completely steered away from Mickey D's. The horror! I guess Big Mac cravings do attack.

Fast forward to the next morning

when I realized that I was craving coffee and

Dunkin Donuts is oh so close by.

So in line....waiting.....I had an epiphany.....

I turned off my car.

It just seemed pointless to sit there

wasting gas for coffee......or quarter pounders.....or anything.

I know it's only a little bit - and the earth hating boyfriend may argue....

but I found myself at the Drive through for the bank the day after that

and once again.....I switched the ignition to off.

WHY does the car NEEEEED to be on?

If it's hot, roll down your window. If it's cold that's another thing - tis the season. But when you can, shut off your car and lower your emissions.

#1, PET or PETE (polyethylene terephthalate): easily recycled, not found to leach. Used in water, juice and soft drink bottles.

#2, HDPE (high-density polyethylene): easily recycled, not found to leach. Used in milk jugs, detergent and shampoo bottles. Soon to be in a new Nalgene bottle.

#3, PVC or Vinyl (polyvinyl chloride): not recyclable; soft PVC can leach toxic phthalates. Used in some cling wraps, children's toys, fashion accessories, rain gear, detergent and spray bottles.

#4: LDPE (low-density polyethylene): recyclable at recycling centers; not found to leach. Used in most plastic shopping bags, cling wraps, some baby bottles and reusable drink & food containers.

#5: PP (polypropylene): recyclable in some curbside programs, not found to leach. Used in some baby bottles, most yogurt and deli takeout containers, Tupperware- and Rubbermaid-type reusable food and drink containers.

#6: PS (polystyrene): recyclable in some curbside programs, can leach styrene, a neurotoxin. Used in rigid foam drink cups, takeout food containers, egg containers, some plastic cutlery.

#7: It's a mixed bag! This code applies to all other plastics, notably PC, or Polycarbonate, which Nalgene is discontinuing in its popular Lexan sports bottles because it can leach the suspected hormone disupting chemical, bisphenol-A. Polycarbonate also doesn't recycle.

But #7 also includes the relatively benign new copolyester Tritan plastic, which Nalgene is substituting for PC in its new Everyday line; Camelbak also makes sports bottles with Tritan.

Alright then. There's the digits. Now get with it at the recycling center.

Simple Demands

Most likely, this weekend there is an Earth Day Celebration in your town/neighborhood or area.

Maybe you even have some more time - perhaps it's the following weekend.

Regardless, I'm making simple demands.

GO.

Take your husband, lover, family, brother, mother.

GO.

Less people are getting out and about these days cause of the good old "A-conomy". More people need to learn and care about our PLANET. You'll be doing everyone a favor.

Chances are your child's school will be learning or doing something to the tune of the celebration. It's another way for you to get involved and help your kiddo realize his contribution to Mother Earth is key.

Personally speaking......

While Sophia is too young to understand Earth Day

I will be taking her to the celebration planned in

Jim Thorpe on Saturday.

Fresh air will do me and baby girl some good

as will getting around to see what the local's are doing to reclaim the planet.

Since the "A-conomy" has been less than giving down there, we're excited to shop at a local used book store for some more children's titles and trade some of ours in.

GO.

D.I.Y. Eco Easter Eggs

Using natural ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen is better for Mother Earth!

YELLOW: Tumeric, Lemon peels

RED: Beets, cranberries, raspberries

PURPLE: Red Wine, Red cabbage

GREEN: Spinach

BLUE: Blueberries

Brown: Coffee, Tea

Boil desired colors ingredients in

H2o w. a little vinegar for 15 minutes.

Cool.

Strain liquid into cups for dipping.

Adding oil will create a cool marbled effect.

Organic your Easter Dinner!

I think you know by now my thoughts on food - meat, etc.

If you have to eat something with a face on it - make sure it's organic and better yet - local.

If you can whip up some meatless treats for your family and guests even better.

& Personally Speaking........

Loosing the baby weight is always on my mind.

Walking with my family after dinner, exploring our development & enjoying time together will help me to forget all the holiday candy (which I do not have in my house) and dessert.

I've committed to walking for at least 50 minutes with my daughter and mother on Sunday.

And....

Sophia is too young to understand that getting a basket of candy is part of a larger holiday ritual.

I also don't want to enforce that every holiday ensures sweet treats.

I'm thinking that marking the days with a special outing or ritual will be more effective building tradition and family values.

An easter egg hunt? Perhaps.

Easter hike. Indeed.

Eco-Etiquette

When donating or re gifting your items to another individual or family friend it's both polite & kind to make sure that those items are clean and "almost new".

You don't want to give someone your dirty unwantables not only because it's not nice

but it's unsanitary.

Think Germs. Not saying your full O' coodies but you get it.

Also, if you are choosing to recycle paper goods, it's better to recycle them in the proper bin rather than pass on ratty bags to loved ones.

You don't want to embarass yourself or make someone else think that they are not worthy of the extra thought

Don't think you have to give away EVERYTHING.

OK, so you are spring cleaning. You're downsizing. You're moving.

Whatever the case may be invited friends and family over for first grabs at the stuff you no longer want to hold on to then donate to charitable causes or have a yard sale.

Packing up all babies clothes and dumping them off on your friend who just had a newborn may lighten your load but could very well overwhelm hers.

And please note - getting rid of unwanted stuff is more about YOU than it is about the person receiving in most cases. Just take a moment to decide the best plan of action for everyone involved sometimes Ebay or Craigslist is best for everyone!

When donating to charity, please make sure that things are in order:

separated, labeled and again, almost new.

If you do have raggy clothing turn those threads

into cleaning rags for the spring rampage your on.

And that's just another thought on Eco-Etiquette

Yes, it was a "gift" and inside were dirty, dusty gifts.

While I'm not an ingrate, I do think that it's important to remember the basics -

especially when it comes to.....germs and children.
